When at last you can rethink the story of painting from the analytic training of artists who were its protagonists, apparirà chiaro il ruolo determinante di Winfred Gaul. Come tutti i migliori di quella compagine, egli approda infatti alla riflessione sui fondamentali pittorici a partire da una ricca stagione autre: che è stata, per lui, la formazione con Baumeister e la vicinanza con Peter Brüning, Karl Otto Götz, Bernard Schultze.
Ciò ha significato per lui operare il lungo processo di decantazione dell’apparato disciplinare e, più, di quello ideologico della pittura moderna – il valore di materia, di segno, di oggettività e non oggettività – in chiave di analisi continuamente delucidata e interrogativa del fare.
Non si è trattato dunque, per Gaul, di porre una condizione teorica e di declinare una restrizione a priori dell’apparato pittorico, ma di esitare un processo criticamente complesso in cui la nozione d’immagine rimanesse salda, ancorché depurata all’estremo, e non fosse tout court sostituita dalla proposizione assertiva dell’oggetto pittorico.
È perciò che la serie dei Markierungen , che ne segna l’irrompere nelle esperienze degli anni ’70, schiude una ricerca che attraverso tappe fondamentali – egli è con i Farbmarkierungen uno dei protagonisti della “documenta 6”, 1977 – ne fa una delle figure di più solido spessore nell’orizzonte della pratica pittorica neoavanguardistica.
“Il risultato del metodo analitico di avvicinarsi alla perfezione tentando sempre nuovamente, di dire tutto in un’unica linea” è dunque, per lui, una risultanza e non una postulazione, che comporta un vaglio sottilissimo delle frequenze e delle condizioni del fare così come degli strumenti cui ricorrere.
Il suo atteggiamento riguarda, in altri termini, più la paternità di un Monet e di un Kandinskij che la derivazione dal concretismo. La questione, per usare le sue parole, non è la linea, ma il tutto.
